The Revolutionary War Essay Example For Students

The Revolutionary War Essay Causes of the Revolutionary WarThe haphazard and disorganized British rule of the American colonies in the decade prior to the outbreak led to the Revolutionary War. The mismanagement of the colonies, the taxation policies that violated the colonist rights, the distractions of foreign wars and politics in England and mercantilist policies that benefited the English to a much greater degree then the colonists all show the British incompetence in their rule over the colonies. The policies and distractions were some of the causes of the Revolutionary War. The interests of England within the colonies were self-centered. The English were trying to govern the colonies by using the mercantilist system. Mercantilism is when the state directs all the economic activities within its borders (Blum). England was not attempting to make any changes that would help the colonists. They limited the colonies commerce to internal trade only (Miller 9). The English were exploiting the colonies by demanding that the colonies import more from England then they exported to the colonies. They were importing raw materials from the colonies and making them into exportable goods in England. They would then ship these goods to foreign market all around the world including the colonists (America Online). Throughout the seventeenth century the English saw America as a place to get materials they didnt have at home and a market to sell finished products after the goods had been manufactured. This was detrimental to the colonies because it prevented them from manu facturing any of the raw materials they produced, and made them more dependent upon England. We will write a custom essay on The Revolutionary War specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now In addition to the unrest caused by their mercantilist policies, domestic political issues distracted them from the activities of the colonies. Throughout the sixteen hundreds, Great Britain was more involved in solving the Constitutional issue of who was to have more power in English government, the king or parliament. When this complex issue was finally resolved in the Glorious Revolution of 1688, England turned its attention back to the colonies and found that colonists had developed their own identity as Americans. There was no central office in England to control what was happening in the colonies. The executive authority in England was divided among several ministers and commissioners that did not act quickly or in unison. Also, the Board of Trade, the body in England, did not have the power to make decisions or to enforce decrees. Due to the distractions from the complex constitutional issues and ineffective governmental organization, the colonists felt further separated from England (Blum 51). The political scene in England was laced with corruption. Officers of the government sent to the colonies were often bribe-taking politicians that were not smart enough to hold government positions in England. After Grenville and Townshend, the most incompetent was Lord North, who became Prime Minister in 1770 after the death of Charles Townshend. North was the kind of politician George had been looking for, a plodding, dogged, industrious man, neither a fool nor a genius, much like the king himself. For the next twelve years, despite the opposition of abler men, he remained at the head of the government (Blum 104). Corruption and incompetence among governing politicians often made their rule over the colonies ineffective. In the years leading up to the final decade before the American Revolution, the relationship between Great Britain and her colonies in North America continued to deteriorate. Relations began to worsen with the great victory over the French and Indians in the Seven Years War. Unwelcome British troops had remained in the colonies. Debts from this war caused the Prime Minister at the time, Lord Grenville, to debt that had doubled since 1754 (Blum 95). England passed many Acts that were ill conceived and had long-term effects on the relationship between England and the colonies. The most controversial of these were direct taxes. The last time Parliament had tried a direct tax was as recent as 1765, when Lord Grenville enacted the Stamp Act which forced the colonists to pay or stamps on printed documents (Higginbotham 34). The Americans felt the taxes of Lord Grenville were a deliberate aim to disinherit the colonists by denying them the rights of the English (Blum 96). The first of these acts were The Revolutionary War Essay Example For Students The Revolutionary War Essay The Revolutionary War Essay was an enormous part of American history. The revolution in Russia, that sparked the overthrow of communism, was a huge part of Russian history. The revolution of Christianity from the concepts of Greek gods was also a large part of religious history. Christianity and Greek gods have many comparisons, contrasts, and these contrasts resulted in Christianity being revolutionary. The concepts of Christianity and the religious concepts of the Greek gods are comparatively alike. To begin, in both religions, humans believe that there are speakers for their God/gods. Gods do not speak to mere mortals. These people are the priests who teach of the gods ways and wants. Some are fortune tellers or prophets, as they were called in Greek times, that foretell the future. For example, Tiriesias, in the plays Oedipus the King and Antigone, was a blind prophet who could see the future and foretell it to people. In Greek times the prophets were of high social status. We will write a custom essay on The Revolutionary War specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now Also, the people believe that their God or gods are above all human ranks. They believe a god is above all and listens to people when they need help. This is why humans pray to the God/gods for forgiveness. The two religious views also believe that the God/gods are watching over their followers. The God/gods decide either before or after a persons life on earth where the person will live in the afterlife, depending on the persons values. Both believe one would either go to a bad place, called Hell or Hades, or a good place, called heaven or the Elysian Fields. Likewise both believe in an afterlife that is eternally chosen. The ideas of the followers of Christianity and Greek religions are also very different. To begin, Christians believe in one almighty God. This is also known as monotheism. Christians believe this God gave the world his only son. When that son was put to death by a human, He told the people He would die to forgive their sins. This shows that God and His son were both caring and forgiving beings. They are respected by the followers of Christianity. God helps humans. Humans pray to this God for help and forgiveness. People also go to church to learn about their religion and to pay their respects to God. The church is thought to be Gods house. This is why people get dressed up and try to look nice when they are guests in Gods house. God and Jesus are thought to live in heaven. Greeks, however, are very different from Christians. They believe in many gods. This is also known as polytheism. These gods are mean and torture the humans for doing wrong. In the play Antigone, the leader speaks, Must, King and quickly too. The gods, provoked, never wait to mow men down.1 This quote proves how quick tempered the gods are. These same gods destine a humans fate. Fate is also determined usually by a family curse. As in Antigone, the Greek tragedy, Antigone states, What more do you think could Zeus require of us to load the curse thats on the House of Oedipus?2 This quote shows how Zeus, a Greek god, has determined Antigones fate by the curse that has been placed on her family. A humans fate is foretold and is kept by the oracles. Oedipus oracle states that he would kill his father and marry his mother. This oracle comes true even though many people of the city of Thebes do not know that Oedipus is Jocasta and Liaus son because they ordered their son to be put to death. People of Greek times do not attend church; they are told of their futures by prophets or by other family members. They do, however, also try to please the gods so that they are not punished. The Greek gods are thought to live above the Greek citizens on a mountain named Olympus. .u00b62a301d479cfaa5b3ef665628645c , .u00b62a301d479cfaa5b3ef665628645c .postImageUrl , .u00b62a301d479cfaa5b3ef665628645c .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u00b62a301d479cfaa5b3ef665628645c , .u00b62a301d479cfaa5b3ef665628645c:hover , .u00b62a301d479cfaa5b3ef665628645c:visited , .u00b62a301d479cfaa5b3ef665628645c:active { border:0!important; } .u00b62a301d479cfaa5b3ef665628645c .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u00b62a301d479cfaa5b3ef665628645c { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u00b62a301d479cfaa5b3ef665628645c:active , .u00b62a301d479cfaa5b3ef665628645c:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u00b62a301d479cfaa5b3ef665628645c .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u00b62a301d479cfaa5b3ef665628645c .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u00b62a301d479cfaa5b3ef665628645c .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u00b62a301d479cfaa5b3ef665628645c .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u00b62a301d479cfaa5b3ef665628645c:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u00b62a301d479cfaa5b3ef665628645c .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u00b62a301d479cfaa5b3ef665628645c .u00b62a301d479cfaa5b3ef665628645c-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u00b62a301d479cfaa5b3ef665628645c:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Kingdom By The Sea Essay Christianity was considered revolutionary by many. Revolutionary is defined as: having the nature of, characterized by, tending toward, and causing a revolution, or drastic change.3 Christianity was a major change in beliefs causing many to think it was wrong. The evolution of Christianity was hampered by the beliefs of the people and their familiarity with the ways of the Greeks. This was such a giant change, many did not like it. Thus, although Christianity may seem similar to the concepts of the Greek gods it has many distinct differences. These differences explain why Christianity can be considered revolutionary. . The first of these acts were . Someone had spotted the British crossing the Charles River trying to get to Concord. Paul Revere spread the word of the British arrival. The British are coming, when the Minutemen found out they were quick to prepare for an attack. The battle in Lexington and Concord was the beginning of the Revolutionary War. There were many causes of the Revolutionary War. One of the main causes was the Stamp Act and the Quartering Act. The stamp act made colonists pay taxes on items like newspapers, documents and playing cards because all these items had stamps. The Quartering Act asked for the colonists to give supplies food and a home for a few nights for the British soldiers. Many of the colonists didnt like these Acts. After the Stamp Act was passed the colonists began to make riots. Delegates from nine colonies met in New York City to prepare a statement. This statement claimed that the Parliament couldnt have these acts anymore because there were no representatives from other colonies in the British Parliament. Not all colonists from New York wanted to separate from Great Britain. There were two kids of people during the Revolutionary War. There were the loyalists and there were the Patriots. Those who did not want to support independence from Great Britain were called Loyalists because they were loyal to the king. Those who wanted independence were the Patriots. Samuel Seabury was an Anglican minister in New York. The British government is the best scheme of government, Mr. Seabury was a loyalist; he supported the government and its ideas. The Declaration of Independence was first read to George Washingtons army on July 9, 1776 in New York City. On the southern side of Manhattan there was a statue of King George III. When New York found out that Washington and his men had heard the big news they got really excited. The Declaration of Independence stated that the colonies would be free and independent. The colonists were so happy that they went to Bowling Green where the statue stood, they took the statue and made bullets out of it to fight the British. The Revolutionary War ended with an American victory. It was not just an American, but it was a patriotic victory. The U.S. was now an independent country. The British had surrendered to the Americans during the Battle of Yorktown. General Cornwallis was the leader of the British troops; he surrendered on October 19, 1781. . The Revolutionary War Essay Example For Students The Revolutionary War Essay The Revolutionary War Essay was an enormous part of American history. A human;s fate is foretold and is kept by the oracles. Oedipus; oracle states that he would kill his father and marry his mother. This oracle comes true even though many people of the city of Thebes do not know that Oedipus is Jocasta and Liaus; son because they ordered their son to be put to death. People of Greek times do not attend church; they are told of their futures by prophets or by other family members. They do, however, also try to please the gods so that they are not punished. The Greek gods are thought to live above the Greek citizens on a mountain named Olympus. .u96fa50bdd8360ef07d4629fda46dcfb0 , .u96fa50bdd8360ef07d4629fda46dcfb0 .postImageUrl , .u96fa50bdd8360ef07d4629fda46dcfb0 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u96fa50bdd8360ef07d4629fda46dcfb0 , .u96fa50bdd8360ef07d4629fda46dcfb0:hover , .u96fa50bdd8360ef07d4629fda46dcfb0:visited , .u96fa50bdd8360ef07d4629fda46dcfb0:active { border:0!important; } .u96fa50bdd8360ef07d4629fda46dcfb0 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u96fa50bdd8360ef07d4629fda46dcfb0 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u96fa50bdd8360ef07d4629fda46dcfb0:active , .u96fa50bdd8360ef07d4629fda46dcfb0:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u96fa50bdd8360ef07d4629fda46dcfb0 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u96fa50bdd8360ef07d4629fda46dcfb0 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u96fa50bdd8360ef07d4629fda46dcfb0 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u96fa50bdd8360ef07d4629fda46dcfb0 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u96fa50bdd8360ef07d4629fda46dcfb0:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u96fa50bdd8360ef07d4629fda46dcfb0 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u96fa50bdd8360ef07d4629fda46dcfb0 .u96fa50bdd8360ef07d4629fda46dcfb0-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u96fa50bdd8360ef07d4629fda46dcfb0:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Nuremberg Trials (782 words) Essay Christianity was considered revolutionary by many. Thus, although Christianity may seem similar to the concepts of the Greek gods it has many distinct differences. These differences explain why Christianity can be considered revolutionary. . The Revolutionary War Essay Example For Students The Revolutionary War Essay Causes of The Revolutionary War Essay The haphazard and disorganized British rule of the American colonies in the decade prior to the outbreak led to the Revolutionary War. We will write a custom essay on The Revolutionary War specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now Throughout the seventeenth century the English saw America as a place to get materials they didnt have at home and a market to sell finished products after the goods had been manufactured. This was detrimental to the colonies because it prevented them from manufacturing any of the raw materials they produced, and made them more dependent upon England. In addition to the unrest caused by their mercantilist policies, domestic political issues distracted them from the activities of the colonies. Unwelcome British troops had remained in the colonies. .u93085134cca673f8558f0db27fc69a1b , .u93085134cca673f8558f0db27fc69a1b .postImageUrl , .u93085134cca673f8558f0db27fc69a1b .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u93085134cca673f8558f0db27fc69a1b , .u93085134cca673f8558f0db27fc69a1b:hover , .u93085134cca673f8558f0db27fc69a1b:visited , .u93085134cca673f8558f0db27fc69a1b:active { border:0!important; } .u93085134cca673f8558f0db27fc69a1b .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u93085134cca673f8558f0db27fc69a1b { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u93085134cca673f8558f0db27fc69a1b:active , .u93085134cca673f8558f0db27fc69a1b:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u93085134cca673f8558f0db27fc69a1b .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u93085134cca673f8558f0db27fc69a1b .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u93085134cca673f8558f0db27fc69a1b .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u93085134cca673f8558f0db27fc69a1b .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u93085134cca673f8558f0db27fc69a1b:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u93085134cca673f8558f0db27fc69a1b .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u93085134cca673f8558f0db27fc69a1b .u93085134cca673f8558f0db27fc69a1b-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u93085134cca673f8558f0db27fc69a1b:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Russian Revolution Essay Debts from this war caused the Prime Minister at the time, Lord Grenville, to debt that had doubled since 1754 (Blum 95). The first of these acts were .

The Cats Pajamas

The Cats Pajamas The Cats Pajamas The Cats Pajamas By Maeve Maddox Not everyone loves cats, but the language has its share of expressions coined from the appearance and behavior of these slinky domestic companions. The slang of the 1920s leaned towards expressions involving animal anatomy, giving us the cats meow and the cats whiskers, both meaning outstanding! It also gave us a non-anatomical cat expression the cats pajamas, meaning the absolute best or really modern and up-to-date. NOTE: Pajamas were a fairly recent cultural adaptation in the 1920s. The word derives from Hindi pajama, the word for loose trousers tied at the waist. Europeans living in the East adopted the comfortable style for nightwear and the fashion eventually found its way to the West. British spelling favors pyjamas. cat In the 1920s a slang word for flapper was cat, (hence the connection of the cats pajamas to the idea of modernity), but in black slang the word meant man, guy, dude. What it means to call a person a cat varies according to context. To call a man a cat is to imply that hes cool. To call a woman a cat is to insult her. catnap a short sleep, usually in the daytime. I suppose power nap is the more current term. Question: what does one wear while taking a cat nap? Answer: Why, the cats pajamas, of course! having no room to swing a cat being in a confined space. When I was little, I imagined a poor cat being swung through the air by its tail. I finally learned that the cat in this expression derives from a term for a whip used to flog sailors in the Royal Navy in the old days. It had nine thongs instead of one. to rain cats and dogs to rain very hard; possibly from the expression to fight like cats and dogs. catkin the furry flowers of trees like willow, birch and oak. The name derives from the soft, pettable texture of the flowers. catcall rude remarks shouted at sporting events catfish a fish with whiskers. (Yum) catwalk a high narrow walkway like those seen on construction sites. The idea is that only a cat could keep its balance. cats-cradle A game in which a string is looped on the fingers to form an intricate pattern between a players hands that can be successively varied or transferred to another players hands. Whether the word derived from the animals name is anyones guess. catsup A condiment consisting of a thick, smooth-textured, spicy sauce usually made from tomatoes. This word has absolutely nothing to do with cats and, in its original form, had nothing to do with tomatoes. Its from Malay kichap from Chinese koechiap brine of fish. According to the Online Etymology Dictionary, catsup (earlier catchup) is a failed attempt at Anglicization, still in use in the U.S. Apparently it was the Americans who added the tomatoes to the original concoction. Also spelled ketchup. catty-corner directional word, meaning that something is diagonally across from something elseanother cat word that has nothing to do with cats. Originally cater-corner. The cater is from an English dialect word meaning to set or move diagonally. Because that cater dropped out of the language, folk etymology got busy and now we have all kinds of cat variants for this concept: catty-cornered kitty-corner kitty-cornered catty-corner cat-a-corner kitty-corner kit-a-corner Want to improve your English in five minutes a day? CIR#4 Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

CIR#4 - Assignment Example ccurs in an individual and that is associated with present distress or disability or with a significantly increased risk of suffering death, pain, disability, or an important loss of freedom†. (Internet Addiction Disorder Web) This disorder was  first  described  in 1995  by Ivan  Goldberg  (Pickett Web). Rapid and regular looking through sites leads to the fact that the human brain loses its ability to in-depth analytical thinking, transforming regular users of the network into people who are impulsive and incapable for intellectual work. However, disturbances in thinking and memory loss are not only the negative impact of the Internet on person. Plunging into the Internet, people gradually lose skills of real communication, which leads to asocial behavior. The statistics is not joyful. It says that â€Å"1 in 8 Americans suffer from problematic Internet use† (The Center for Internet Addiction Recovery (â€Å"IAD†) Web) and it increases in the Eastern countries, as China, Taiwan, and Korea. Furthermore Stanford University’s research in 2006 showed that â€Å"1/8 of those surveyed had at least one problem due to too much use of the web† (Internet Addiction Statistics Web).   In addition to mental and cognitive disorders internet dependence is dangerous in connection with physical conditions. Spending a lot of time near the screens, we spoil the vision; we cause the Tunnel Syndrome of the wrist. Internet addiction disorder, which is accompanied by a sedentary lifestyle, leads to various diseases of the spine and joints, cardiovascular disease and many other

Egyptian Cultural Term Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Egyptian Cultural - Term Paper Example Ancient Egyptians relied on cosmology to prophesize what the future holds. They exhibit a â€Å"set of values and a cluster of ideas that made them Egyptian rather than Ethiopian or Greek.† 1 In this modern era, an Egyptian is identified no longer by a particular genotype or language; â€Å"rather is comprised of many different people who participate in one general Arab culture.† 2 As it happens, being an Egyptian is like being American; the term is associated to citizenship. Egyptians were legendary for revering their pharaohs not merely as rulers, but gods. Today, Islam is the most prevalent religion in the country, with Christianity and Judaism that both adhered to the teachings of Jesus Christ, as the minor group. Islam was introduced by the Arabs during the 600 A.D. It points to Allah as the one God, and indoctrinates the philosophies of the prophet Mohammad. Muslims, as the followers refer to themselves, read from their holy book Qur’an and pray to Allah fi ve times daily (Moscovitch 2008). â€Å"Long years of coercion and exploitation by foreign ruling powers and native autocratic states have left its mark on the Egyptian personality.†3 Based on their current political situation, the fact evidently shaped the character of the Egyptians and their attitudes towards the government. It is an Islamic ideology to concentrate power in one person, the Caliph, and hail him the "ruler of the world", and this remains the main characteristic of all the Muslim rulers in Egypt (Fahmy 2002). Muhammad Ali who led Egypt from 1805 to 1848, Gamal Abd al-Nasser from 1952 to 1970, Mu?ammad Anwar el-Sadat from 1970 to 1981, and Muhammad Hosni Sayyid Mubarak from 1981 to 2011 all epitomized a government of absolute despotism; the â€Å"executive, civilian, military, and judicial functions†4 are vested solely upon the head of the state. In despotic states the nature of government requires the most passive obedience and when once the prince's wi ll is made known, it ought infallibly to produce its effect. Here they have no limitations or restrictions, no mediums, terms, equivalents or remonstrance, no change to propose, man is a creature that blindly submits to the absolute will of the sovereign.5 II. POLITICAL REVOLUTION IN EGYPT: CAUSE AND IMPACT Countless protests are heard throughout Egypt; nevertheless, it is believed that the tensions rooted from these three issues: 1) Muslim terrorism that lead to some 200 deaths in the following 18 months during the 1990s, 2) the ratification of the Martial Law that imprisoned around 2000 militants mostly associated with the Muslim Brotherhood—a mainstream movement in Egypt with followers at all levels of society, and 3) the allegation of the Coptic Christians concerning mistreatments by the government and its failure to put the sought-after democracy into practice (History World 2010). In his 30 years of presidency, Mubarak retained the emergency laws initiated by his predec essor. These laws gave him a greater presidential power â€Å"including the right to appoint the Cabinet, without any provision for parliamentary majority, and the role of supreme commander of the armed forces, and chief policy-maker in matters of security, diplomacy, and the economy.†6 The president was ousted in a national uprising on February 11, 2011, making way for constitutional

Elodea Essay -- Papers

Elodea Elodea is a genus of aquatic plants often called water weeds. Elodea is native to North America and it is also widely used as aquarium vegetation. The introduction of some species of Elodea into waterways in parts of Europe, the Australia, Africa, Asia, and New Zealand has created a significant problem, and it is now considered a noxious weed in these areas. Elodea canadensis, sometimes called American or Canadican waterweed or Anacharis (a former scientific name) is widely known as the generic water weed. The use of these names causes it to be confused with similar-looking non-native plants like Brazilian elodea (Egeria Densa) or hydrilla (Hydrilla verticillata). American waterweed is an attractive aquarium plant, and is a good substitute for Brazilian elodea since it is native to Washington's lakes, ponds and rivers. American waterweed is usually fairly easy to distinguish from its more notorious relatives, like Brazilian elodea and hydrilla. All of them have leaves in whorls around the stem. However, American waterweed has three leaves per whorl, whereas hydrilla and Brazilian elodea almost always have more than three leaves per whorl. Brazilian elodea is also a much larger, bushy plant with longer leaves. American waterweed also looks very much like another native elodea, Elodea nuttallii, which generally has three narrower leaves per whorl. The American waterweed lives entirely underwater with the exception of small white flowers which bloom at the surface and are attached to the plant by delicate stalks. It produces winter buds from the stem tips that overwinter on the lake bottom. It also often overwinters as ... ... semi-shade (light woodland) or no shade. It can grow in water. Potting: The Canadian Pondweed grows better in cooler water. In temperatures above 70Â º F, it becomes spindly. This plant can be grown under 8 to 10 feet of water and will easily reach the surface of the average water garden. This plant derives most of its nourishment from the water through its leaves; its roots serve mainly to anchor it to the bottom, therefore, they may be planted in sand or pea gravel as well as soil. They may be anchored down and just dropped into the pond or planted in containers of sand or gravel. If they are only floated in the pond, too much sunlight and air will kill it. If fish don't keep this plant in check, it will need to be pruned back to prevent it from choking other water plants and taking up swimming space for fish.

Fahrenheit 451- Pleaseantville Essay

In the film Pleasantville and Bradbury’s novel Fahrenheit 451 the two controlled worlds are similar in the way their societies are ruled. Everyone living in the two stories is oblivious to individuality and how unique is not even a word that is used in speech in either. However this is all they know, and they’re not in control; no one has a mind of their own. In Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451 and the film Pleasantville, the theme of control is presented through dehumanization, collective loss of memory and mastery of nature. Both of these stories display extreme dehumanization. In the text of Fahrenheit 451 regard to human life is very low. Technology controls their life. In the example form Fahrenheit 451 when Montag asks, â€Å"Mildred, will you turn the parlor off? And she replies with â€Å"That’s my family†(Bradbury pg. 46). This shows that Mildred is attached and the technology or parlor is somewhat in control. This theme of technology controlling your life is also present in the film Pleasantville. Bud and Mary Sue’s life all depends on the controller. This is because it is the only way that it got them in the show and the only way it can get them out. Don’t let technology control your life! Collective memory loss is seen in both these stories majorly. For example in Fahrenheit 451 when Clarisse and Montag are walking and talking and she says â€Å"Strange, I heard once that a long time ago houses used to burn by accident and they needed firemen to stop the flames†(pg. 6). This is Clarisse forgetting what firemen are really supposed to do, fight fires. Collective memory loss is also seen in Pleasantville when a fire has broken out outside Bud and Mary Sues house and they call the firemen. First of all in order to get the firemen to come they had to say there was a cat stuck in a tree because when bud yelled, â€Å"FIRE! † none of them even reacted. Then when the firemen had got there, there wasn’t even a response from any of them about the fire and they didn’t even know how to use their hoses. Collective memory loss can really change the way you live and it’s surprising how much you can really forget. Governmental control of citizenry and has complete control over you. In the example when the TVs or the government says â€Å"Police suggest the entire population in the Elm Terrace area do as follows: everyone in every house on every street open a front or a rear door of look through the windows. The fugitive cannot escape if everyone in the next minute looks from his house†(pg. 131-132). When this shows up on the screens everyone can see it because everyone is watching TV and they all listen. In Pleasantville when George and Bud make the painting and are being individual they tell them they cannot do that and cannot paint. They even have a set of rules written out when people are being different so they no longer can. In both Pleasantville and Fahrenheit 451 through the mastery of nature and collective loss of memory The theme of control as presented in these two stories is thankfully not what we experience. However, some people experience life like this and are very controlled in everything that they do. I’m very glad that I live where I live and when I live because if even one of those was changed my life could be so different.

It Is the Experiences of Childhood That Determines Who We Will Become. Discuss Essay

Khaled Hosseini’s The Kite Runner enunciates how we become products of who we are when young. Amir, to win his father’s approval allows for the rape of his friend, Hassan to occur. In the process he becomes an insomniac. However Amir is able to redeem himself by rescuing Sohrab from further abuse by the Taliban. Similarly, Baba is never able to overcome his guilt of not acknowledging Hassan as his son, and thus leads a tormented life. Assef too, being a child with treacherous views grows to be a member of the Taliban. Amir, to win his father’s approval allows for the rape of Hassan to occur and becomes an insomniac as a result. Amir, believing Hassan is the ‘price (he) (has) to pay’, allows him to be raped, causing him to carry an enormous amount of guilt and shame with him, until he seeks redemption, forcing him to become an ‘insomniac’, as he is no longer able to be at peace with himself. By moving to America, Amir believes he can ‘bury (his) memories’ and forget the traumatic events of the winter of 1975. However, the amount of guilt Amir is carrying with him for not correcting his wrongdoings is what forces him to eventually return to Kabul and seek redemption. Amir, who is a ‘coward’ when a child, remains so until he is forced to sacrifice himself for Hassan, by facing Assef in order to rescue Sohrab, and ultimately gain redemption. Baba leads a tormented life as he is never able to overcome his guilt of not acknowledging Hassan as his son. Baba, because of his childhood, is never able to bring himself to admit that Hassan is own son and as a result is a ‘tortured soul’. Throughout his childhood, Baba growing up with Ali, becomes aware of the social inequalities between them, and this affects his inability to claim Hassan as his own son. Baba grows up with a sense of superiority at being a Pashtun, which is the biggest reason holding him back from owning up to his actions. As it is a ‘shameful situation’, Baba does much charitable work in order to achieve redemption, but nothing he does is able to overcome his guilt and shame at not giving Hassan the life he deserves, as a Pashtun. Assef, who has horrific thoughts and views as a child grows to be a member of the Taliban. Throughout his childhood, Assef bullies many of the neighbourhood children, being viewed as a ‘sociopath’, controlling them through his ‘stainless steel brass knuckles’, and keeping them at a fearful distance from himself. Assef has a shocking ‘vision’ of eradicating the Hazaras, and being a member of the Taliban years later, this is put into practice, when all the Hazaras in Mazar-i-Sharif are massacred. Assef, being a bully in childhood, obtains a sense of power through controlling those around him through a sense of fear, grows to be a member of the Taliban, who also control the country through the sense of fear they instill in their citizens of Afghanistan. Through Amir, who becomes an insomniac at his guilt and shame of not preventing a horrific crime, Baba, who is a tortured soul at not being able to admit to his actions, and Assef who grows up to be a member of the Taliban from being a bully, Khaled Hosseini’s The Kite Runner demonstrates how we will grow up to be products of who we are when we are young.

Drought affects Endangered Bid Species Essay

Drought affects Endangered Bid Species Essay Drought affects Endangered Bid Species Essay The story is similar along the Riverina with the Upper Goobarrangandra receiving 76mm in the last 24 hours, with a third of that falling since 9am yesterday. NSW’s northeast will receive the most rainfall today with Girralong, near Nambucca, having had 60mm since 9am yesterday. Barrington in the Hunter has had 58mm, while further south Mt Elliott had 54mm and Gosford 44m on the Central Coast. While the rain has been welcomed the weekend’s storms will not be enough to break the drought gripping 60 per cent of the state. The grim summation came from the NSW Farmers Association as WeatherWatch meteorologist Don White said the selective pattern of the storms also meant that while some drought-stricken properties enjoyed downpours of more than 60mm, others just a short drive away received nothing more than a shower to settle the dust. NSW Farmers Association northern regional manager Stuart Murdoch said that the rain would regrettably do â€Å"almost nothing† for most primary producers in NSW since most properties needed to have a deep soaking that lasted for days in order to restore soil moisture levels before cooler weather returned. â€Å"The northern half of the state has been very ordinary for a long, long time,† Mr Murdoch said. â€Å"People are talking about dams drying up that have never been dry before.† â€Å"We need four-plus inches - 100mm-plus - but it’s probably not going to happen.† WeatherWatch meteorologist Don White said the selective nature of the rainfall was a result of wet weather systems moving up from the south in precise bands carved out by the jet stream. â€Å"Places like Tullamore and Cobar, and some places out on the Darling had falls of 50-60mm, but either side of it there were only falls of

How to Teach Private English Lessons Successfully

How to Teach Private English Lessons Successfully Teaching one-to-one can help improve your teaching salary, and give you some flexibility in scheduling. Of course, teaching one-to-one has its drawbacks as well. Heres a quick rundown on the art of teaching English one-to-one, as well as some strategies and tips to help you get started or improve your  one-to-one teaching skills. Before You Get Started Before you begin teaching  one-to-one youll need to do a needs analysis to be effective. Performing a needs analysis for a new student can be a simple as having a conversation about what the student would like to cover, or as complicated as asking the student to fill out a questionnaire. However you go about delivering your needs analysis, understand that many students dont necessarily know what their needs are. English learners who havent studied in an academic setting for years might say something along the lines of I need to learn English. and leave it at that. Here are the basic questions and tasks you should ask or perform for a basic English learning needs analysis for  one-to-one teaching: Doing a Needs Analysis Have a short conversation in English to warm things up. If you speak the local language you might want to begin in the learners native tongue, but switch to English as soon as possible. This will give you a feel for the basic level. Ask why the English learner wishes to have  one-to-one teaching. If she is hesitant, make suggestions: work, travel, general interest in learning the global language of choice, etc. Based on the answer to this question, dig a little deeper. If your  one-to-one client wants to learn English for work, ask about specific tasks they need to perform in English (feel free to switch language if you speak it). If the client wants to improve English for travel, find out where they are traveling, what they plan to do there, etc. Ask if theyve studied English before. When was the last time they studied? Have they ever taken a test such as the TOEFL, FCE, etc.? Provide a quick listening and reading comprehension exercise to get a feel for their comprehension skills and vocabulary. If possible use the Internet to fish something out based on their responses to your previous questions. The closer you get to their interests, the better youll understand their true comprehension capabilities. Provide a short writing task if they need English for work or studies. If possible, give them a quick grammar review quiz. Planning One-to-One Lessons Once youve provided a needs analysis, you can decide on specific outcomes for your lessons. State clearly what you expect your one-to-one student will be able to do by the end of your sessions together. Once the student understands the specific goals youve outlined, and agreed to these goals, planning your lessons will become much easier. Make sure these outcomes are specific. Here are some examples: Instead of Improve listening skills: Improve comprehension skills at conferences by focusing on language commonly used in presentations.Instead of Improve grammar: Improve grammar in written communications such as emails and memos.
